Flores de Mayo
May
Commemoration of Mary in the Philippines.
Flores de Mayo is a Catholic festival celebrated throughout May in the Philippines in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The name, derived from the Spanish word “flores,” meaning flowers, is believed to have originated in 1865 in Malolos, Bulacan. At the end of Flores de Mayo, the Santacruzan procession takes place, commemorating Queen Helena and Emperor Constantine's search for the Holy Cross. This event, which follows nine days of prayer in honor of the Holy Cross, celebrates the discovery in Jerusalem and celebrated in Rome.
